The brawl involving River Plate’s Marcos Acuna and Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries reportedly stemmed from a 2022 World Cup grudge. This according to Argentine broadcaster TyC Sports, via FCInterNews. They report that Acuna taunted Dumfries regarding the quarterfinal the two had played in, setting off the melee.

Inter Milan went through to the last 16 of the Club World Cup with victory over Argentine side River Plate, who finished their final Group E game with nine players and are out of the tournament.

River Plate exited the Club World Cup in extraordinary fashion, having two players sent off and seeing Marcos Acuna dragged to the ground by a group including Inter coach Cristian Chivu as the defender attempted to pursue Denzel Dumfries down the tunnel after a 2-0 defeat.
